Stories of our rescue dogs, living life to the full

Cassie

Hi there. We adopted Cassie back in March and whilst she was a typical Springer juvenile, she was also headstrong, determined and to be honest a tad wild. 🤣

With lots of walks, training sessions interjected with games and fun, she has now learned that ‘team work’ is much more rewarding and fun.

Here are some photos of our fabulous girl, enjoying the great outdoors….as Springers should.

I hope you love them.

Kindest regards.

Kiya and ice

Rescued 6th November 2011. It is now seven years and what a rewarding time it has been they are the most fabulous dogs ever. They are now 12 and 13. Ice has arthritis but is coping well and Kiya is now deaf but does very well with hand signals. Their favourite time is travelling in the car to the lake to go swimming, during the summer went every day but as it is cold now we go just twice a week. They get dried with a towel and then drying coats go on so they are very snug. Very spoilt dogs living a very good life in the countryside.

Springer Spaniel Rescue story : Rommel

HI, our Springer Spaniel Rescue story

I thought you might like to hear our success story for Rommel (was Logan). We picked him up May 2017 and he was very skinny and in need of TLC. He wasn’t house trained and had an awful irritable bowel. After many trips to the vets and sleepless nights and tears thinking we were going to lose him, as at one point he was under 10kg. I am delighted to say he is a very healthy 17.5kg and has a wonderful coat but more importantly we would like to think he is in doggy heaven. We often get stopped by dog walkers who have seen him since we got him who have said how happy and healthy he looks.
He is also a fantastic beating dog with a charming character. I have been asked back to beat full time on a shoot my husband is a part of mainly due to how good Rommel is, a complete natural.

He has also got a really good relationship with Monty a 5 year old golden labrador who is also a gun dog (we say he is his older brother).

So thank you for this wonderful bundle of sunshine who has brought love and laughter into our lives so much so we have forgotten the tears and worries from last year.

I have attached a few photo and videos that you might like to see but also share as a success story.

Keep up the great work you do helping to give dogs like Rommel the life they deserve.

Best Regards
Lynda & Andrew Venus

Buddy in the driving seat.

Its been a hectic time for Buddy since we picked him up from the kennels on the 23rd of June, five days later he was off on his holidays with us. We had to introduce him to the motor home, he quite like the drivers seat and made his self at home, decided where he was going to sleep and settle in the driving position between the two front seats.
First stop was Delamere Forest with plenty of walks through the woods, next stop was Bala Lake walking in the hills and swimming in the lake, returning on the Bala Lake Railway, he just curled up under the seats and went to sleep. All that walking and swimming had tired him out!
We found an enclosed field to practice his off lead walking and recall, he did very well but was easily distracted with all the smells to investigate.
Then we were off to Harlech to see the castle and play on the beach, lots of recall and heel work practice and paddling in the sea. The last visit was Llanrwst for walks through the forest up to Llyn Geirionydd for more swimming.
All too soon we had to return home but his adventures didn’t stop, lots more walks on the West Pennine Moors.
Buddy has been really good and we are building up our trust with each other, he enjoys being brushed and let me trim his feathers, under his tummy and the knotted fur behind his ears. He’s still very sensitive to his neck and rear being touched and this has to be done very gently, we are getting there with him.
His next stage will be going back to school to get his good citizens training and getting him use to visiting the vet.
Best Regards,
Malcolm and Karen

Buddy

Just a few photos of Buddy, he’s settled down really well and appreciates the comforts of home.
We’ve had no problems with him, he’s had plenty of walks and called in to see my mum at York Village, he was very gentle and on his best behaviour!
Travelled well in the car looking out of the back window and then going to sleep.
Spoken to many people on our walks and he was really friendly with them and settled down whilst we talked.
He’s now fast asleep on the settee in the conservatory with Karen .
Tomorrow we will try him in the motorhome, I’m sure he will be fine.
Thank you for introducing us to Buddy and all your help with the adoption.

Charlie Part 2

Good Morning

A four-week report…..we can’t believe just how much our lives have been enriched by sharing them with Charlie, and like to think he feels the same.

Starting this morning and working backwards, have all been for a run together in the pinewoods with plenty of puddle sploshing we tried on the ‘army’ harness for the first time since we tried it at the kennels and are delighted to announce it fits now!

Yesterday was full of firsts; he went for a romp on the beach with my friends staffy/collie cross who is also a rescue dog, four big humans and a baby. It was the first time they had met and thanks to Shadow not mithering they were quite happy in each other’s company apart from at one point when they were both running at full pelt and shadow accidentally barged into Charlie.  Quick scrap, peace was restored, and they continued their merry way!

Later on in the day, my parents came for tea and Charlie actually looked at them and let them look at him. He is happy to take a treat (politely) from them, and yesterday played with his squeaky ball with my dad – although he wasn’t quite ready for dad to take the ball from him I had to do that still. He was much more relaxed with them here though this time.

Finally, we have found a pool in the dunes which is deep enough for him to swim in properly. His little face, when he realised he couldn’t paddle any longer, was a sight to behold, pure bliss. He made us laugh so much the way he throws himself into chasing the inevitable stick.

He has very cosmopolitan taste buds these days, dispensing with the tinned hero when the three tins were eaten. He still enjoys the sticky mix but with assorted toppings; his dad’s chicken and ham always go down well but he also loves his mum’s weirdo food; black bean Dahl, pad thai, hummus, crunchy peanut butter, veg chilli, carrot soup, soya cream, rhubarb crumble, poached egg, cooked veg (but never raw thank you very much!)…

He is learning to use his nose for more than tracking animals, although he checks up on the activities of the hedgehog, red squirrel and mice in the garden every morning. We hide treats around the house and garden and get him to find them, which he loves.

Charlie has two somewhat strange but entertaining habits; as we live in a bungalow he gets to come in the bathroom. The shower is over the bath. When either of us pulls the shower curtain back he is standing there waiting and licks our knees dry!

The second occurs when I’m gardening, he stares with a look of such excited anticipation into the two bird baths!? Who knows what will happen in the summer when the toad sits in one for a soak as is its habit 😂.

He has had a visit to the vets as his rear dew claws were very long, in fact one was digging into the pad. We were pleasantly surprised how well it went and were very fortunate that the vet was patient, calm and very kind. I’m going back for a social visit in a week or two before we return later in the month for his boosters.

He continues to be a dream in the car and house, never trying to get on furniture and sleeping very happily in the kitchen behind a child gate.  The snarling seems to be becoming a thing of the past and happens only occasionally these days. His tail continues to go in full circles as well as side to side, and his back legs still try to overtake the front ones.

What did we ever do without him?

Ralph

Hi NWESSR

Thought I’d update you on Ralph as he has been with us a year now. He is wonderful. So much more settled and he seems quite attached to us too! He’s in a really good routine and responds well to this. He’s still rather unpredictable in the home but no problem if left to approach people when he wants to; he’s very wary if people approach him. Outside he’s friendly and approachable with people and tends to ignore other dogs, though very occasionally wants to play.

He is enjoying swimming at Canine Health and Hydro to help his knees and walking very happily on an extending lead. We all enjoyed walking along the canal yesterday though got rather muddy on the return journey through fields.

Maybe we’ll be back on the hills before long. Trying at present to keep to even ground where there’s less chance of him twisting his knees again.

 Best wishes

Christine
