…AND HE’S DONE IT!!

127¼ miles and 16 hours after setting off from Liverpool early yesterday morning, Anthony arrived safely in Leeds justafter 9.00pm.

What an absolutely amazing achievement – to cycle the entire length of the Leeds & Liverpool canal in one day!  It was a tough day (rain, slippy towpaths, exploding tyres…) but he carried on regardless.

Everyone at NWESSR is extremely grateful to Anthony for taking on, and completing, such a huge challenge, to raise much-needed funds for the charity.

Thank you so much to everyone who has already sponsored Anthony’s bike ride – it really is appreciated.  Thank you too to those NWESSR owners and Springers who supported him along the route yesterday.

If you haven’t already sponsored him, but would like to, please go to:

You can read the story behind this mammoth challenge at:

Congratulations Anthony!  Thank you to you, and your family/support team, from NWESSR!

Dogs Day Out Review

After a few years away, it was so lovely to see some familiar faces and some new ones too at our rebranded Dogs Day Out this year!

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, gave up their time to help, and offered prizes for the raffle and tombola.  Without your support, we just wouldn’t be able to hold the event.

The weather thankfully stayed dry, but it was a bit windy so things did fly around, including spaniels on the Dog Agility course, which was ably run by Eric again!

There were a lot of happy faces in the Show Ring, with a couple of new classes this year.  Thanks to Judge Jennie who had the pleasure of meeting all the wonderful entries in the ring, registered once again by John in the entry tent, and announced by Bledd.

There was a competitive spirit in the Dog Show Jumping ring, but Wendy still ensured that everyone had great fun.  As did Marie, who watched over the greased lightning Fastest Recall for the first time this year.

Thanks to Mark and Stephanie who did a marvellous job encouraging people to have a go at the Gun Dog Scurry.  Next time we’ll have them a bit nearer so more people can enjoy watching the dogs finding the dummies.

Sarah did a wonderful job in the village hall, with the help of Carol, serving tasty homemade cakes and drinks.  It was a couple of long baking days for Sarah, and thank you also to everyone who brought a cake for us to sell. They went down a storm, including the spaniel-shaped shortbreads!

David and the team from Pizza Principles were serving up some delicious pizzas and supported NWESSR with a donation from each one sold.

There were lots of winners on this year’s tombola, superbly run by Anthony (not NWESSR’s trainer – there’s two Anthonys!), with many generous prizes being donated.  First prize on the raffle was a bottle of Moët Champagne, again kindly donated, which was won by Elinor who had been selling tickets all day (it wasn’t a fix!).

Heather did a grand job selling natural treats, dog shampoo and lovely bags of grass seed to repair those ‘little patches’ on your lawn!

Sue also did a great job holding onto all the leaflets on the membership stall in the wind!  We also launched some new merchandise including NWESSR mugs, coasters and dog bandanas.  If you missed out on the day, but would like to purchase any of these, please drop an email to dogsdayout@englishspringerrescue.co.uk.

Please also contact us if  you would like any of the photos from the day, and we’ll put you in touch with our wonderful photographer Janet, who will be able to send them to you for a small donation to NWESSR.

Even if we haven’t mentioned you personally, we are nevertheless extremely grateful to ALL the volunteers who helped with the event.

Last year we re-homed a Springer each week and demand for our support is ever increasing.  The proceeds from the event will go a long way in helping us to continue our work, so thank you once again for your support.

Next year Dogs Day Out will be on Sunday, 25th June 2023, so save the date and we’ll look forward to seeing you again for another fabulous day!

Cheshire Show

On Saturday 31st July NWESSR was fortunate enough to be offered a stand at the prestigious Royal Cheshire County Show 2021. Once we got the gazebo set up, not helped by the very high winds early in the morning, we had a very successful day!
While the event was a little pared down compared to previous years, we had a fantastic day chatting to fellow Springer lovers and raising our charity’s profile. The highlight of the day was definitely seeing our rehomed dogs who attended with their families. Ruby, Max, Ollie, Suzy, Buster and Maja are all so clearly loved and are so bonded with their people. It was also fantastic to see Jet, our guest of honour, who attended along with our trainer, Anthony. Despite it being a very busy environment Jet retained a laser like focus on Anthony at all times, showing that, given time to build up trust with the right owner he will be a fantastic walking companion. We met so many lovely families during the day and, more importantly, lots of lovely dogs stopped by for refreshments as we had plentiful stocks of treats and water bowls. Cheshire Life Magazine kindly stopped by and have taken some photos of our gorgeous dogs so look out for some familiar faces in issues to come.
Thanks to everyone who attended and supported us in whatever capacity; NWESSR would be nothing without its supporters, volunteers and of course our gorgeous Springers.

Springer Fun day 2019 Report

NWESSR Dog Fun Day 2019

Cooler weather, with a breeze, but dry what more could we ask for?   Well a good turn out? which we got, all our wishes came true !  It was wonderful to see all those wagging tails, springing around, as well as lots of other breeds, all shapes and sizes.

The show ring was well attended, with a new judge this year, Jennie Tracz, enthusiastically judged, and Julie as steward, enjoyed by all, as did the little Cocker dressed as a BEE ! who won the Fancy dress.

Jo in the village hall worked hard keeping us all well fed, with those wonderful cakes.  At the end of the day it looked like a swarm had hit with little left, bacon and sausage barms went down well.

The amateur scurry competitors got the advantage of the “scent” dogs this year, Mark, our judge says there was a definite “scent” around, as the scent dogs were distracted from the dummies, and a collie got the prize this year!  Supported by his son, Owen and Penny as steward all had a thoroughly enjoyable day.

The Temptation Alley had faithful good recall dogs, whilst passing dogs got the “temptation” and ran off with the liver treats!!  Supported by Laura and Alex who had lots of fun.

The fastest recall run by experts now, Selina and David, had a very good day, lots of jollies and competition here.

Doggy show jumping was hotly contested by the addition of a leader board. Competition was fierce, with some dogs being entered multiple times in order to win.  It was a risk whether to go for a clear round or fast time.

Dog tombola had fun too, it never ceases to amaze the judges, Angela, John and Joe, with so many tennis balls the dogs can’t make up their minds!  That is, unless we have cheeky owners who direct their dogs to the tennis balls with the “winning” numbers !

Have a go Agility had plenty of participants.  With owners employing ever more bizarre tactics to get their pooches around the course.  Some were even encouraged by being offered the chairwoman’s cake !  There was even a pair of entrants, who although one was wearing a lead and collar, were not of the canine variety.  It was all great fun.

Michael was in attendance providing free training advice, as well as catching up with old friends and their dogs.

There was plenty of retail therapy to be had on our stalls. Steady Paws, Assistance dogs, Body shop, Hounds Asleep, Jacks Wardrobe, Bric a BARC, Pets Portraits, Melanie’s Crafts, Tombola & Raffle, the NWESSR stall and not forgetting Joe’s Mocktails.

We were, as usual, a little short on volunteers, but those who attended and helped were real troopers. They all worked very hard, both on the “hot” Saturday putting up tents and rings, and on the Sunday ensuring the rings were manned.  A very big thank you to all our Volunteers, we hope you enjoyed the day and please please do come next year.

Dog Fun day 28th June 2020 please put this in your diaries, and lets make it the best ever.
